Bredward Farm is situated in a picturesque valley at the foothills of Hergest Ridge. This forms part of the Offa’s Dyke Trail, which runs from Gladestry over to Kington, about 6 miles. Hergest Ridge is also known for the place where Mike Oldfield wrote his famous Tubular Bells.
We can see Hergest Croft Gardens and part of the Kington Golf Course, which is the highest in England.
During the Second World War, 9 acres at the farm were requisitioned by the USArmy to form part of the largest American Military Hospital in the country. Ian’s relative was one of the “Dam Busters” ‘DingeyYoung’, unfortunately he never came back, he was shot down on his way back from the successful mission. The “Dam Busters” used the Elan Valley dams at Rhayader, both day and night, to practice their low flying. |
